Welcome to My New Blogging Blog

INTRODUCTION

Hello, my name is Sarah, and thank you for dropping by my self-introduction for my blog! It might be a little lengthy but bear with me. I grew up in a rural town in southern California. My grandparents from my father’s side immigrated to the states from Italy and raised my father in southern California. On the other hand my mother immigrated to the US from Japan when she was in high-school. Because of my mother’s close ties to her culture, she taught me the Japanese language and traditions. Growing up, I found it difficult to find identity as a “wasian”. For example at Chinese restaurants, I would often receive forks while my other asian friends would receive chopsticks. To make things even more complicated, I would often feel ostracized in caucasian settings as well. For example, when I was in high school I was hiking on a trail in Oregon on a family vacation, and an old caucasian couple told me with a sarcastic tone, “Ni hao, welcome to Oregon”, and snickered as they walked away. So in a sense, I am well accustomed to feeling like an outsider.

I am a single-mother with a 7 year-old child named Jeremiah. Most mothers say this about their children, but I honestly believe that Jeremiah is a bright child, and has a bright future ahead of him. He isn’t very social, but enjoys spending time with his friends from church. Aside from spending time with his friends, he enjoys mom and son time as well. Some of my favorite memories with Jeremiah are playing games outside with him, and also cooking special meals with him. His favorite dish is this seven-cheese mac and cheese we make from time to time. I’m hoping that he doesn’t hit the point of his life where he starts hating me.

As a single mother, I work tirelessly as a waiter in a nice Japanese restaurant to support my son and myself. Although I am thankful for my current life situation, this was not what I planned originally. When I was in university, I was studying to become a high school teacher, but at the beginning of my junior year, I got pregnant by my boyfriend (who I met at the beginning of freshman year). I was a Christian and he wasn’t, so naturally he didn’t understand how I did not support abortions. He did not want to bear the responsibilities of being a father, so he essentially ghosted himself from my life (I don’t want to get into details). I hope to one day complete my education and receive my teaching credentials so that I can become an elementary school teacher.

Because of my low income, I have to depend on the government for healthcare and money and occasionally for food. As a consequence of my business at work and raising my son, I don’t have too much time to care about politics and what’s going on in the country, much less what’s going on overseas. My friends tell me I should keep up with current events so I can make better decisions for myself and my son, and to just know more about what’s going on in the world in general. I have been convinced, so I will temporarily be posting my reflections on current events I read and how they pertain to me for the next few weeks. Thanks for reading!
